Revised Capital Requirements Directive - A step towards recovery

Sharon Bowles MEP, Liberal Democrat economic affairs spokesman, welcomed the first reading agreement on the Capital Requirements Directive, saying that the package should help to build confidence.

Bowles stresses importance of adequate funding for financial supervisors

The European Parliament today voted in favour of a measure that will establish funding for the EU financial supervisory committees. Due to pressure from the Parliament the funding levels have been increased from €36.2m to €38.7 for a three year programme.

Extension of music copyright not fit for the future - Bowles

Sharon Bowles MEP, ALDE Shadow Rapporteur for the Crowley Report on Term of Protection and Related Rights, today expressed her hope that the large number of MEPs who voted for rejection of the extension of copyright for audio recordings will send a strong message to the Council of the European Union that this measure is not fit for the future. At present there is a blocking minority in the Council.

Bowles slashes withholding tax incentive

Sharon Bowles MEP, a leading ALDE member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, welcomed the adoption by the European Parliament today of recommendations to the Commission and Council concerning new rules which will help to close loopholes on the taxation of savings income in the form of interest payments.

The European Parliament has come to an agreement with the European Council on a deal that will significantly cut the cost of mobile roaming sms and data charges from the 1st July 2009.

Progress was made yesterday in protecting one of the world's most valuable and threatened resources. A vote in the European Parliament took the EU one step closer to banning the import and sale of illegally logged timber.
