I have been a member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) in the European Parliament since I became an MEP in 2005. I was elected Chair of the Committee on 16 July 2009.

ECON is one of the most powerful committees in Parliament. It is responsible for the regulation of the financial sector, the free movement of capital and payments, competition rules, tax provisions, and the functioning of the Euro.

In the last Parliament (2004 - 2009) my principal areas of work were the Capital Requirements Directive (CRD) and Solvency II.
